Volunteer Opportunities

If you're into kids, computers, bikes, education, social activism, or the city, BicycleWORKS is a great way to use your talents to help make the world a better place and have fun in the process. Your participation in BWorks is guaranteed to be karma enhancing. Whether you are still in school, just retired from work or in between, the time you spend with kids working toward brighter futures can be rewarding for all.

Whether you have an hour or two a month to give or some substantial time on your hands, BWorks has a job to match your interests and skills. This page is intended to show just some of the ways that volunteers can join the fun. If you don’t see a job description that fits what you have in mind, drop us a line or give us a call to share what you’re willing to do.

Working with the Kids

Bicycling

Earn-A-Bike Instructor - teach various levels of Earn-A-Bike from the basics of bike parts, safety rules, and maintenance to advanced apprentice-level courses.

Earn-A-Bike Assistant - assist instructor with teaching various levels of bicycle repair. Help kids on one-on-one basis with written exercises, repairing and stripping bikes for parts, and administering tests.

Rides & Special Events Assistant - Help plan and coordinate bike rides, field trips, and special events with other groups for the kids

Helping out in the Shops

Bike Mechanic - help repair bikes and assist kids in repairing bikes. All levels of bicycle repair help needed from helping neighborhood kids inflate their tires and tighten bolts as needed on loose parts to bike overhauls. Help supervise kids working on bikes.

Donation Acceptance - Collect donations, get donor address information for acknowledgment and tell donors about BWorks, its programs, and how their donations help the program.

Phone Help - answer phones when shops are open, logging phone messages, forwarding messages to appropriate volunteers, returning calls on a timely basis.

Shop Management - Help with business aspect of the shops, determining parts and supplies to be ordered, recording their arrival, taking inventory, and making sure volunteers have what they need to do the repairs. Help kids learn retail operations.

Getting the Word Out

Marketing/P.R.

Marketing Coordinator - Help develop and coordinate marketing strategies with fundraising activities. Help design & build displays and develop marketing materials.

Newsletter Editor - Help develop, write, and produce a newsletter on a regular basis. Ask others to write articles. Help the kids create and produce their own newsletter or web page.

Booth Sitters - attend area events to promote BWorks, collect cash donations, and get volunteer sign-ups.

Garage Salesperson - attend garage sales to sell bikes and accessories in the community as well as publicize BWorks to the general public.

Fundraising coordinator - Help develop and coordinate fundraising strategies for programs and activities of the organization.

Grant writer - Help prepare grants to be submitted to corporations, foundations, and governmental funding agencies.

Volunteer Caller - Help recruit new volunteers desiring to help BWorks. Arrange contact with more experienced volunteer to explain job duties or answer questions.

Behind the Scenes

Educational Coordinator - Help develop remedial and enrichment education programs and projects for youth both after school and during the summer. Projects in the past have included art bike design & decoration, programs with the Missouri Botanical Garden, and map making.

Community Service Coordinator - working with neighborhood and community groups help find service projects for participants in BWorks to do community service. Help educate kids why giving back to the community is important and the role of volunteerism.

Volunteer Scheduler - schedule volunteers to help out at events, work in the shop, and other projects as needed. Must be organized. E-mail access is a big plus.

Building Maintenance & Construction - help maintain buildings and update work-space for programming needs.

Board Member - help make plans for the future of BWorks.

Other positions possible include high school and college community service projects, internships, and practicums. BWorks will work with your school’s requirements.
